The Partido of Avellaneda is located next to the City of Buenos Aires and the Río de la Plata. It is 52 km² and it had 328,980 inhabitants in the last census (2001).
Its main economical activities are industry and commerce. In Avellaneda there are oil refineries, metallurgic and naval industries.
The history of the area started in 1580 with the second foundation of the City of Buenos Aires. The present day Avellaneda started as suburbs of the city. The Partido de Barracas al Sud (the first name of the district) was officially created in 1852. In 1904, it took its present name to honor XIX Century Argentine President Nicolás Avellaneda.
Two of the most important sporting clubs and soccer teams from Argentina are from Avellaneda: Racing Club, and Club Atlético Independiente.

The Partido of Avellaneda got a new flag. The news is dated 01.11.2023
(November 1st 2023)
The design presented by Juan Ignacio Iglesias, a
student at the Sara Eccleston de Wilde School, was the winner.
The “I
want my flag” contest, promoted by the Municipality of Avellaneda, through the
Institutional Communication Council, called on all local educational
institutions to create the flag of our city. As a result, more than one hundred
models were presented and the proposal chosen by the 8,000 voters who
participated in the call was that of Juan Ignacio Iglesias, a student at the
Sara Eccleston de Wilde School. His teacher is Verónica Luna.
This flag
brought together elements that constitute the identity of the seven towns that
make up Avellaneda, and took into account the prominence of the work and
education industries. The background design is made up of three rectangles. The
blue represents the stream and the Río de la Plata, and the green represents the
sustainable policy in reference to parks, squares and small squares. Each
locality is represented by a star. At the same time, the seven stars account for
the day of the founding of Avellaneda, under the name of Barracas al Sud, on
April 7, 1852. The shield in the middle symbolizes different particularities of
our district, such as the port, sports and citizenship. The past and present
dialogue to build the future.

During General Perón’s second government (1952-1955), some elements of the Peronist emblem were adopted for the regional coat of arms of Avellaneda Municipality.
After Perón was deposed in 1955, all these emblems were forbidden by the Military Government.

Gerli is a city (with the status of Locality) within two partidos of the
Province of Buenos Aires. Half of the city belongs to the municipality of
