In 1974 Friedens resident Lester Griffith and his art teacher Paul D. Beal researched and designed a flag, which was approved by the Somerset County commissioners and became the official county flag.
Thirty-right years later while visiting the area in 2012, Griffith, who now lives in Mesa, Arizona, was presented the flag by county commissioners.
Several Years ago Griffith got the Idea to design a flag for his hometown of Friedens. He worked on several renditions and together with some other Friedens natives finalized the design.
Much thought was put into the design. Griffith wanted it to depict historical and famous points of interest about Friedens. His flag includes the IXL Creamery, and Father John C.F. Heyer, who was the first Lutheran missionary to Indian. The flag will be carried during the Independence Day parade in town on Thursday. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at the former creamery property.

Notes: the flag also includes references to the fourth of July parade from 1944 as well as the Friedens Fire Department, which was founded in 1931.

I designed this image for my home town of Friedens, Pa., where I grew up, on a piece of 8.5 x 11 art paper. After I had finished the design I contacted 8 friends to get their input on my design for a flag. I then called a meeting to discuss the flag design; we held the meeting at the Friedens Fire Hall and showed them my designed flag image. They all liked it, but they also gave me some input, asking me if I could add the Fire Dept. est. 1931 and our 4th of July parade est. in 1944, so, I added them to the flag image. They all liked it and it was finalized. One of my friends out of the eight asked me if she could be my sponsor, I said ok, I gave her my flag design and she took it to a local flag company and had some flags printed. She then took a picture of one of the flags, and sent a picture of one for my approval. It looked a little wrinkly. That is the image Mr. Sigley based his drawing above on.
