Description of the flag

The Mackinac Island flag has been modified. Changes were made owing to responses from the city council and community to the original flag design, said Ben Nye, owner of Flagship and Great Turtle Toys stores. "I really like the new design and I liked the old design," Mr. Nye said. "They're both clean and classic, but we had feedback from the community and council, and they thought it would be a better seller if it was less abstract." The white semicircle in the middle of the flag has been changed to further resemble a horseshoe shape. The words "Mackinac Island" have also been added in an arch above the center symbol. The first flag design was selected in a contest last year. The winner was awarded $500 for the original at the Lilac Tree Barbeque Sunday, June 28 [2009]. Proceeds for the flag will go, in part, to the Mackinac Island Community Foundation. Mr. Nye hopes the funds may be used for projects to help clean Island beaches or parks. With the purchase of the flag, customers will receive a card explaining what its symbols represent. No further changes will be made to the flag. "This is the final decision," Mr. Nye said. "We've been working on this project for almost two years now. I think we've come to something that's really good."
