Selectmen on June 24 named the winner of the town’s contest for coming up with a design for a new flag to help Kennebunkport celebrate its Bicentennial this year. Of the 35 entries the judges reviewed, the one submitted by Nicholas DeBenedictis of Arlington, Massachusetts, rose to the top of the flag pole. Selectman Allen Daggett served as one of the judges, alongside Sharon Cummings, Tom Bradbury and Mary-Lou Boucouvalas.

The winning design fit all the criteria the contest’s organizer, Tracey O’Roak, the assistant to Town Manager Laurie Smith, had listed during a selectman meeting in March. DeBenedictis’s design was simple, used meaningful symbolism, employed two or three basic colors and did not feature any lettering or seals. The criteria were based on the North American Vexillological Association’s five basic principles of flag design.

“The inspiration for the flag comes from the town’s nautical history and stunning vistas and beaches,” said select board Chair Sheila Matthews-Bull. The design’s blue background symbolizes the ocean and sea and Kennebunkport’s most traditional color. The anchor that appears in the design depicts both the town’s shipbuilding history and fishing trade. The circle on the design represents the sun and the waves that are a “constant as Kennebunkport reaches for tomorrow,” Matthews-Bull said.
