The Kalakavan shipping company was established in 1972.
Ziya Kalkavan was elected President of the Turkish Shipowners' Association in 1956. He served as the President of the Turkish Chamber of Shipping from 1984 until his death.
The Turkish Chamber of Shipping is currently presided by another member of the Kalkavna dynasty, Metin Kalkavan (b. 1959).
