Info
from Wikipedia: The "Islamic Resistance Front in Syria" ("IRFS"; Arabic: جبهة
المقاومة الإسلامية في سوريا, (Jabhat al-muqāwamah al-Islāmīyah fī Sūriyā)
previously known as the "Southern Liberation Front" ( جبهة تحرير الجنوب) (Jabhat
taḥrīr al-Janūb), is a militant organization established in response to the fall
of the Assad regime in early December 2024 and the resulting Israeli invasion of
southern Syria. On December 17 the "Tahrir al-Janoub" (JTJ) or the "Southern
Liberation Front" appeared with the goal of pushing Israel soldiers out of
southern Syrian territory (i.e., the Golan Heights). To avoid confusion with
similar sounding militias, less than a month later on January 11, 2025, it
renamed itself as the "Islamic Resistance Front in Syria". The IRFS is a
Shia-Muslim militia that received funds from the Shia-Muslim affiliated IRGC of
Iran. The red upraised rifle mimics the logo of the Shia-oriented Hezbollah
militia of Lebanon. The prominent red rifle in the center is gripped by a fist
and forms part of the Arabic script, symbolizing armed resistance. The flag’s
main elements include: top Quranic verse atop the rifle: “بَعثْنا عَلَيكُم
عِبادًا لَنا أُولي بَأسٍ شَديد” (“We sent against you servants of Ours,
possessed of great might”) — Quran Surah Al-Isra (17:5). This verse is often
used by Shia militias to frame their struggle as divinely sanctioned. Main
central text: “وليٌّ باشر” – this loosely translates to: “Oh my avenger, go
forth” or “My appointed one, strike”, suggesting readiness for confrontation or
divine vengeance. The red stylized rifle is integrated into the Arabic letter
“ش” (shīn) to emphasize militant identity. At the bottom, the long thin line
reads: "Islamic Resistance Front in Syria". At the right hoist side there is a
hidden flagpole sleeve.
