Universidad de El Salvador (UES) is the only State university in El Salvador.
Also the biggest and oldest university in the country, UES was established by a
Decree adopted on 16 February 1841 by the Constituent Assembly and promulgated
by the provisory head of the state, Juan Nepomuceno Fernández Lindo y Zelaya.
UES was inaugurated in 1843, providing classes in pure mathematics, logic,
moral, metaphysics and general physic. Faculties were organized in 1880. UES is
now composed of 12 Faculties and 6 Institutes, spread over four centers:

Central Campus (San Salvador);
- Western Campus (Santa Ana);
- Eastern
Campus (San Miguel);
- Paracentral Campus (San Vicente).

The motto of UES, written on a scroll at the base of the emblem, reads 'Hacia
la libertad por la cultura", "Towards Liberty Through Culture". The emblem,
portraying Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, was
inscribed on 5 September 2017, together with the university's name, on the
Register of Intellectual Property (Volume 313, folio 407).

The UES Ombudsman (Defensoría de los Derechos Universitarios) is in
charge of "the protection, defense and support of the university rights
against the acts or omissions of the authorities that could threaten the
rights of the university's members, and of the promotion of university
rights".
The flag of the Ombudsman is white with a seal featuring the
scales of justice, two open hands and the emblem of UES.
