The coat of arms is or a representation of Saint Mary standing on a crescent moon and on a terraqueous globe azure with a coiled snake argent and nimbused with a ring of nine visible five pointed stars azure and dressed argent and mantled or and flanked by two castle towers gules open and with port and windows azure and in chief a couped saltire gules flanked by two inescutcheons azure each charged with five plates. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "Vila Viçosa".
