It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of blue and yellow.

Coat of arms

Shield Or with base wavy of Azure and Argent, issuant from base a triplemount Vert, a bendy bandarilha (a bullfighters tool) Sable garnished Gules and Azure, a sinister bendy pitchfork Sable bladed Gules, both crossed per saltire, in chief a Marian crown Gules. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "ABIUL".
Meaning:
The crown is representing Our Lady of the Snows, the local patron saint.
