Coat of arms

[Ponta do Pargo commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 4 Jul 2010

The arms are Vert a chevron abased Gules fimbriated Or and in chief two keys Or over Argent per saltire and pinting up and in base a red porgy naiant Argent garnished Sable. Mural crown argent with three visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "PONTA DO PARGO - CALHETA".
Meaning:
"Ponta do pargo" means "Red porgy cape" ("pargo" usually stands for a number of edible fish of Sparidae, Lutjanidae and Haemulidae families, but in Madeira it is exclusive to species Pagrus pagrus), the word "ponta" means here "cape" or "headland", instead of the more usual "cabo" it is polysemic to mean also "tip" and "corner", and that makes the chevron canting. St. Peter is the patron of the Catholic parish this commune derived from and is conterminous to and synonym of, and his attributes, the keys of Heaven are on the arms, too.

Flag and coat of arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : III Série in 2004.01.20.
