Coat of arms

Shield Vert with base wavy of Argent and Azure, a pillory Argent, flanked by a crescent recumbent Or beneath a 5-point star of the Same at dexter, and two keys Or crossed in saltire at sinister, issuant from base a throughout bridge Argent masoned Sable, having three arches. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "COJA".
Meaning:
The crossed keys are an attribute of St.Peter, probably being the local patron saint. The pillory and the Roman bridge are local monuments.

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

The arms are Azure issuant from a base wavy Argent charged with a barrulet wavy Azure a three-arched bridge Or masoned Sable and in chief a barrel Argent ringed Sable and garnished Sable. Mural crown argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "BARRIL DE ALVA"
Meaning:
"Barril" means "barrel" the wavy base refers to the local Alva River, thus making these arms canting.
