About Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan is a part of the former Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, that was mostly tributary areas of several lower rank states within J&K. After independence of Pakistan and India, this territory stayed without any official status under Pakistani military influence, known as Northern Areas. In 2009 Pakistan gave a self-governance to the territory under the name Gilgit-Baltistan.
