Pacifica Shipping (1985) Ltd.

[Pacifica Shipping Ltd.] image by Neale Rosanoski, 3 November 2010

Pacifica Shipping (1985) Ltd. Originated 1982 as Pacifica Shipping Ltd. In 1983 Union Shipping acquired an interest gaining control in 1984 and then in 1985 sold the company to the Skeggs Group. It was renamed Pacifica Shipping (1985) Ltd. and continues to the present. The first flag was designed by the then Chief Officer but although flown over their Christchurch Head Office the ship declined to fly it so it is a moot point to whether it had any official status. Unfortunately my detail recording is sketchy and may not be accurate but it was in line with being a royal blue flag with a narrow yellow horizontal band with arising from this what is taken to be a block "P" and the bow view of a ship.

In 1985 the first flag proper was designed first being sighted flying 5.2.1985 by the "Spirit of Free Enterprise". On a blue flag was a white bird [presumably a seagull though nobody was clear on this point] viewed from above and based on an actual flag held. The flag was retained in 1985 though being flown in conjunction with that of the Skeggs Group.

In 8/1991 a new flag was sighted being flown over their H.Q. which by then was based in Lyttelton. This was white in a 1x2 format with their logo which comprised a blue panel inscribed "pacifica" in white and the top of the panel being "lifted" appropriately for the middle letters i.e. outline mode, whilst flying away from the fly end of the panel is a blue outlined white bird with the upper wing being slightly longer with the view of the bird being from below and to one side so this upper wing is the nearer and the side of the head is being looked at [cf. original view].

Pearl Kasper Shipping Co. Ltd.

[Pearl Kasper Shipping Co. Ltd.] image by Neale Rosanoski, 3 November 2010

Pearl Kasper Shipping Co. Ltd. Formed 1947 its coastal trading fleet was sold 1966. The sources are from B&W images with the letter colours not given and black being assumed. The shade of blue is taken from a funnel photo with the assumption being that the flag which is given as blue with a white diamond throughout bearing the letters "PSCoK" at the points by Sea Breezes 6/1979, is a similar shade.

A similar livery was used by their subsidiary Inter-Island Shipping Co. Ltd. formed 1951 with in this case the letters being "ISCoI" being given by Sea Breezes 6/1979 and The Log 2/1990.

Port Taranaki Ltd.

Port Taranaki Ltd. Previously operating as Westgate Transport Ltd. the name was changed in 2005 to Port Taranaki Ltd. The new flag with the same proportions consists of the identifying name and the mountain [Mount Egmont/Taranaki] graphic. There are two approved colours of the Port Taranaki logo, PMS*1795 red and black. "Port" is 45% black, "the west gate" is 60% black and is confirmed by a photo of the flag flying outside the port building earlier this year.

Keith Ramsay Shipping Agencies, Dunedin-Invercargill Shipping Co.

Keith Ramsay Shipping Agencies. Originally Keith Ramsay Shipping Agencies going back to 1870 as shipowners, but later with steamers they became shareholders in several companies and then in 1931 became Keith Ramsay Ltd. until struck off 1984. According to The Log 8/1992, as operators of the Dunedin & Invercargill S.S. Co. [1873-1906], they used a white flag with a red cross and per quarters the red letters "KRSCo". There are two problems with this. (1) The flag shows "Co" rather than an "A" for "Agencies" though this may have been a case of variable trading names and (2) Sea Breezes 6/1979 give the operated company as Dunedin-Invercargill Shipping Co. and whilst a certain laxity in accuracy in records of actual early company names is not unusual, Sea Breezes also show that this company had its own flag of a red pennant with white cross and white letters "DISCo" in the quarters in descending size. However the Ramsay flag could also have been used for such as the Southern Steam Shipping Co.[1907-1924] for which Lloyds confirm them as being operators.
