Status of the Flags

According to Kannik, Norway used to have 2 kinds of pilots: Ordinary pilots, using the 'standard' white-over-red and uncertified pilots (kjentmann, sg.), who could pilot boats only in a limited area, who used green-over-white. Do these still exist? Kannik mentions that they are disappearing (written in 1956).
Ole Andersen, 08 June 1998

According to the 1979 Norwegian edition of Pedersen, the 'kjentmann' flag was at that time no longer used. As others have pointed out, it seems these pilot flags have been replaced by signal flags.
Jan Oskar Engene, 10 June 1998
