Blazon: På blå grunn to gull ringar, 1-1. In English: Azure two bracelets or.
Approved by the royal resolution of 22 May 1987 after a drawing by Jarle
Skuseth. [c2j88]
The
municipal web site explains that the arms show bracelets (wrist rings) found
in the church yard in Aukra in 1936, originating from the Bronze Age ca. 1000
BC. There are no other such pairs found in Norway and only one somewhat similar
in South Sweden. The rings are 8 cm in diameter made of gold 65 grams each. It
is said that they represent cooperation, loyalty and love. The design is also
said to represent sunset over ocean. It is also said that the two rings
represent the Julsund strait and the Gossen island, after the original
explanation by Knut Rød., who proposed the design idea in the first place. The
original design included a single ring, but it was increased to two after the
requirement from the State archives.
