This is an old settlement, dating probably from before Roman times. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Prince/Bishop of Luik/Liège until 1794. When Noord-Brabant and Limburg were "Generaliteitslanden" (ruled directly by the States General, which appointed a governor, from 1648-19th century) Luyksgestel was an enclave, where Catholics were allowed to practice their religion openly.

Old unofficial flag: chequy of red and white; in top hoist a square
charged with the municipal arms.
This was probably used as a parading flag during the celebrations of
the 750 birthday of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1935.
