Background

Borno State is located in north-eastern Nigeria.  It was formed in 1976 following the division of North-Eastern State and until 1991, it contained what is now Yobe State.  The state is the epicenter of the clashes with the Islamist group Boko Haram and government security forces.

The state flag of Borno has a light green field in the centre of which is the state emblem which features a map of the state superimposed on which is the Nigerian coat of arms, the name of the state and its motto, "Home of Peace".  Two variants are known to exist.
