It should be noted there is some misinformation online. The coat of arms was adopted on 25 January 1656, the day it was granted the title of Very Noble and Very Loyal City by the Viceroy, likely Francisco Fernández de la Cueva. However, the authorities needed royal confirmation, counted 5 years from the day of its grant; this confirmation did not take place until 1712, partially because of the negligence of the council. It does appear the coat of arms has stayed the same from the date of its adoption. The current version appears to have been adopted after the time of the Independence in 1821 to remove Spanish royal elements.
The coat of arms has decoration on all of its sides. The shield is divided into three quadrants. The upper quadrant depicts a star in the upper-right and upper-left corners. In the center is a sun with its rays and a cross over it; this remembers a battle against the Indians in which, according to legend, a solar eclipse happened; the cross is for the city's devotion to the Holy Cross. The lower-left section continues this story, depicting Saint James on horseback riding into battle with a red cross (on flag) and sword, when apparently he appeared and the Indians surrendered. The lower-right section depicts five ears of wheat and two clusters of grapes from a tree, a representation of the fertility of its soil and products of the time.

The original coat of arms depicted the Spanish greater royal coat of arms to remember the fact it was given by a royal grant. At the bottom was a small image of the shield of the city, attached to the greater royal coat of arms of the time.
