The coat of arms of Playa del Carmen was designed by plastic artist Glenda Hecksher Ramsden, with her sculpture known as "the coin" being presented on 28 June 1993, the same day it became a Municipality. Description according to the government site:
The contour of the shield is a border in which Maya glyphs alternate, representing the number eight, in allusion to the eighth municipality constituted in the state of Quintana Roo. Inside of this contour, in the background of circular form, the head and body of a serpent is represented which ends in each one a Maya face emerging from the jaws, one of them in the pose of communication [at the bottom; the other is at the top]; also, two hands are represented saluting and [inside at the top:] the symbols of the moon and sun, also the Descending God of Tulúm [depicted upside down], pyramid elements [three at the bottom] remembering the settlements of the Maya culture in this region; a Chac Mool which is elevated as the symbol of communication [with its hand stretched out and sending a message to the Descending God] and also the waves that reflect the condition of coastline.
In the border, Mexican flags are also seen. The edges of the contour depict leaves.
