Being asked to do so by the Secretary of Education of the State, Municipal President Arturo Monreal Tinajero charged an artist with designing the Municipal Coat of Arms in 1953, the name of which is unknown. Description according to the council:
It is a shield in the English form with border split into two cantons. In the point, there is a curved mantle, to conform to three total partitions. The dexter in chief is of argent and contains a cornucopia filled with limes, the sinister in chief is of azure containing the figure of Saint Francis of Assisi with crucifix between his hands, in the mantle of the floor is gules and contains a scene, to the dexter the Laja River, to the sinister an Indian looking to the background, dressed with outfit of war, feather-hat, and shield, standing on a rocky path, in the center an agave plant flowering and in the background the Dos Cerros [hills]. The border is of gold with the split CHA-MA-CUE-RO [historic name]. The shield is adorned with baroque lambrequin crested by a Franciscan cross.
