Sikasso (Bambara: Sikasǒ) is a city in southeastern Mali, 375 kilometers from the capital, Bamako, 100 kilometers from the border with Côte d’Ivoire, and 45 kilometers from the border with Burkina Faso. It is Mali's second largest city, with an estimated popuation in 2023 of 348,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the Sikasso Cercle and the Sikasso Region.
The city of Sikasso was founded in the 17th century; it began to expand in the 19th century under the leadership of Mansa Daoula Traoré and served as the capital of the Kénédougou Kingdom. It became a full-status municipality on November 18, 1955.
Economically, the city relies primarily on agriculture (mangos,
sweet peas, sesame, cashews, and ginger), with a significant portion of this
produce exported throughout Mali and to neighboring countries. Cotton
processing and oil milling also play important roles in the local economy.
Sikasso has been twinned since 1982 with Brive-la-Gaillarde in
France, whose website displays the flag of Sikasso: white with the circular
emblem, occupying the fulle height of the flag:

The
emblem has the national colours of Mali, and show in the center an elephant.
