ALADI was established through the Treaty of Montevideo on August 12, 1980 replacing the ALALC (AsociaciĆ³n Latinoamericana de Libre Comercio, English: Latin American Free Trade Association) establishing the following general principles: pluralism in political and economic matters; progressive convergence of partial actions towards the formation of a Latin American common market; flexibility; differential treatments based on the level of development of the member countries; and multiplicity in the forms of concentration of commercial instruments. The organization's flag is a white horizontal background with the logo in the middle, the logo being a map of Central and South American countries with the organization's initials in capital letters and below the name in Spanish and Portuguese.
