Area: 3, 781 sq.km
Acceded to the Union of India on April 7, 1949
Founded in 1197. The rulers of Dungarpur claim descent from the Rajput house of
Mewar (see Udaipur-Mewar). Towards the end of the
12th century, Samant Singh, the eldest son of the ruler of Mewar, had to leave
Mewar in favor of his younger brother Kumar Singh. Samant Singh drifted into the
hilly area of Bagar and, within the next century, Samant Singh successors
controlled the whole province of Bagar, Rawal Udai Singh of Bagar was killed at
the battle of Khanua in 1527, fighting for Mewar against Moghul Emperor Babur.
His territory was thereafter divided between his two sons, forming two separate
states. Prithvi Raj remained in Dungarpur while his brother Jagmal Singh became
independent ruler of Banswara.
Flag (from Filcher, 1984):
"The flag of the State of Dungarpur is rectangular, composed of seven horizontal
bands (the five central bands are equal in width and the two extreme ones are
half the width of the others). The colors are, in the order from the top:
purple, dark blue, light blue, green, yellow red and orange (saffron). The State
Arms are placed in the center of the flag".
Chrystian Kretowicz, 21 January 2003
Dungarpur is described in Ed Haynes' site noting in 1931 it had a population
of 227,000 in 1,460 square miles, and the flag is shown as a 1:2 horizontally
stripped flag of (from top to bottom) purple, dark blue, light blue, green,
light blue, dark blue, purple, and the stripes with widths 1:2:2:2:2:2:1.
