Faculties at the University of Zagreb

The University of Zagreb is composed today of 29 faculties (list), 3 academies (list) and a number of other entities.

The various constituent units of the University of Zagreb are legal persons on their own, having their own Statutes, which often, if not always, prescribe the emblem and the flag. The emblem is sometimes refered to as a "coat of arms" even if it is clearly not a heraldic coat of arms, but in other cases it is called simply a symbol or a logo.
Almost regularly, the Statutes include prescription that the symbol ("coat of arms") of the University and its flag are to be used as well. Sometimes it is even prescribed that the University flag and arms are also those of the particular unit.
In some cases no symbols (besides the administrative seals required for legal purpose) are prescribed, but clearly, some are in use. In yet other cases, there is a "new" symbol in use, while the Statutes prescribe an older version. Or, the Statutes simply mention the symbols to be defined further in some other internal regulations.
Very often, the "coats of arms" are made of a circular seal, with inscription around the edge and an emblem in the centre, often featuring a building. Other are more innovative, soem of them featuring a commercial graphical logo.

Almost as a rule, the flag is monocoloured, charged with the emblem. The colour of the emblem ("coat of arms", logo, symbol) is often, but by no means always, not defined for individual use; however, they are then, mostly, prescribed to be shown in a particular colour on the flag. Sometimes even the use of the emblem on the flag prescribes different colour then when used individually.

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law (Facultas iuridica) was established within the Royal Academy of Science (Regia scientiarum academia), with the reform decreed by Empress Maria Theresa in 1776. The Academy was disbanded in 1850, the Faculty becoming the Royal Legal Academy (Regia academia iuris), and in the 1874 reforms its became the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences (Pravoslovni i državoslovni fakultet), changing the name to the current one in 1926.

Article 3 of the Faculty Statutes, Statut Pravnog fakulteta, last amended on 20 June 2005 (text), prescribes the "coat of arms" and the flag of the Faculty.
The "coat of arms" consists of a circular emblem depicting the University building (also the seat of the Faculty), like in the emblem of the University itself, inscribed around with the University name at the top and the Faculty name at the bottom in Latin, and with year "17 - 76" inscribed in the left and right part of the circumference. The "coat of arms" is not prescribed to have a Croatian variant; as I have been able to notice, as a rule, it is used with the Latin inscriptions. However, the "dry mark" and seal of the Faculty, prescribed in the same Article, are described almost in the same wording as above, but with Croatian texts, and with year "1776" inscribed under the drawing of the building rather than in the circumference.
The flag is prescribed as light blue with the emblem in the first third of the flag. The flag in actual use (video), however, is vertical, dark blue with the golden emblem in the centre.

The Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology (Prehrambeno-biotehnološki fakultet) has roots in the Royal Technical College (Visoka tehnička škola), established in 1919 as as an institution independent from the University, becoming part of it in 1926 as the Technical Faculty. The Faculty was divided in 1956 into several independent faculties, one of which was the Faculty of Chemical Engeenering, Food and Mining Technology (Kemijsko-prehrambeno-rudarski fakultet). In 1960 with the separation of Mining into its own Faculty, it became the Faculty of Technology (Tehnološki fakultet), from which in 1980 the current Faculty branched out.

Article 6 of the Faculty Statutes, Statut Prehrambeno-biotehnološkog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu (pročišćeni tekst), last amended on 18 January 2011 (text), prescribes the seal of the Faculty as a circular seal depicting the stylized initials "PBF" with the University name in two rows beneath it, over a wattle ornament and year "1956" all encircled with the Faculty name.

In 1876 the Matematics and Natural Sciences Department (Matematičko-prirodoslovni odjel) was formed in the Faculty of Philosopy, and it remained its part until 1946, then a separate Faculty was formed. While the more literal translation of the name in English (Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics) was used until recently, the Faculty prescribed its official name in English to be Faculty of Science by Decision Odluka o nazivu Prirodoslovno-matematičkog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu na engleskom jeziku (text), adopted on 11 July 2014.

Article 6 of the Faculty Statutes, Statut Prirodoslovno-matematičkog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu, last amended on 20 June 2013 (text), prescribes the "coat of arms" and the flag of the Faculty.
The "coat of arms" consists of stylized initials PMF encircled with the inscription bearing the University and the Faculty name, and years "1876" and "1946". When shown in colours, the initials are a green "P", a red voided "M" over a gray mash, and a blue "F".

The Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering (Rudarsko-geološko-naftni fakultet) has roots in the Royal Technical College (Visoka tehnička škola), established in 1919 as as an institution independent from the University, becoming part of it in 1926 as the Technical Faculty. The Faculty was divided in 1956 into several independent faculties, one of which was the Faculty of Chemical Engeenering, Food and Mining Technology (Kemijsko-prehrambeno-rudarski fakultet), from which in 1965 the current Faculty branched out.

Article 5 of the Faculty Statutes, Statut Rudarsko-geološko-naftnog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu (Pročišćeni tekst), last amended on 25 March 2013 (text), prescribes the emblem of the Faculty and the use of the miners' flag.
The emblem consists of two concentric rings, the inner black and the outer green, the later interrupted in top right part and its segment coloured black moved outwards.
Besides the University flag, in ceremonial occasions it uses the miners' flag - horizontally divided green-black with a golden hammer and mallet in saltire, and also a white, vertical flag with the faculty emblem in the centre over the black letters "RGN" (photo).

The root of the School of Dental Medicine (Stomatološki fakultet) is the Odontology Chair established in 1922 in the School of Medicine, and then the Odontology Department in 1948, that is considered the establishment of the Faculty. The name was changed to Stomotology Department in 1957, to became a separate Faculty in 1962.

Article 65 of the Faculty Statutes, Statut Stomatološkog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu (Pročišćeni tekst), last amended on 20 March 2011 (text), prescribes the "coat of arms", the flag and the emblem (logo). However, the "coat of arms" is not described, only the emblem (logo) is, while the flag description uses the term "coat of arms" for the emblem in its centre.
The emblem (logo) consists of a circular seal depicting the Faculty building over year "1948", encircled with the University and the Faculty name.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, white with the emblem in the centre. The emblem diameter is half the flag width. The emblem colour is not prescribed, but blue seems to be in use.

The Faculty uses another set of symbols, probably an older version that still seems to be around. The alternative emblem shows the circular seal with the rectangular depiction of the building, inscribed beneath it "HRVATSKA" (Croatia) and in the next line "1948", above it "U ZAGREBU" toped with a wattle ornament, encircled with an inscription "STOMATOLOŠKI FAKULTET SVEUčILIŠTA" within double outer edge.
The flag, basically the same as prescribed today, is recorded in use as well (photo). The emblem there is shown in blue, however, larger than the prescribed half of the flag width in diameter.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

In 1919 the Veterinary College (Veterinarska visoka škola) was established in Zagreb; it became a Faculty in 1924.

Article 9 of the Faculty Statutes, Statut Veterinarskog fakulteta (Pročišćeni tekst), last amended on 18 July 2012 (text), prescribes the"coat of arms" and the flag.
The "coat of arms" is described as a two-sided seal, differing in the inscription being Croatian on one side and Latin in the other. The emblem is in shape of a circular seal, with conjoined initials "M" and "V" one above the other, and between them the Aesculapian rod with a snake. Between two circles around is the inscription of the University and the Faculty names and year "1919".
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the silver Faculty emblem in the centre. There is nothing in the flag description to indicate the possibility that the flag is also two-sided with the emblem in one language on the obverse, and in the other on the reverse. However, one should not dismiss the possibility.
