The Town of Mali Lošinj (8,388 inhabitants in 2001, 6,296 in the town of Mali Lošinj) is situated on the island of the same name (Lošinj). In the adminstraive reorganization of Croatia in 1993, it was given the Municipality status, but the Town status was returned in 1997.

The symbols of Mali Lošinj are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Mali Lošinj, adopted on 23 August 1996 by the Municipality Assembly and published the same day in the County official gazette Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 21.
Soon afterwards Correction Ispravak Odluke o grbu i zastavi Općine Mali Lošinj was published in 18 October 1996 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 24.
Decision Odluka o izmjeni i dopuni Odluke o grbu i zastavi Općine Mali Lošinj, adopted on 15 May 2003 by the Town Assembly and published on 23 May 2003 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 13, mostly changes the word "Municipality" to the word "Town" where appropriate.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company from Rijeka.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.
The Correction to the original Decision adds "with a golden (yellow) border around it [the coat of arms]", which had been, inadvertently, omitted from the original text describing the flag.
At least three different versions of the flag are in actual use:
- with the coat of arms outlined in yellow (photo, photo);
- with the coat of arms without the yellow outline (photo);
- with the coat of arms only with the yellow outline (photo, photo).

Coat of arms of Mali Lošinj

The coat of arms is "Azure a three-masted sailing ship maroon with full sails or".
The arms must originate from sometime in the 19th centruy, when the port took a bigger importance than the nearby Veli Losinj ("veli" meaning greater, "mali" lesser, though these attributes are no longer accurate). It seems that such a coat of arms in different artistical renditions was used throughout the 20th century, as shown by Zmajić [zma71].
