Presentation of La Faute-sur-Mer

The municipality of La Faute-sur-Mer (664 inhabitants in 2018; 726 ha) is located on the Atlantic coast of Vendée, bordered on the west by the ocean and on the east by river Lay.. The municipality was established on 18 December 1953, separating from La Tranche-sur-Mer.
La Faute-sur-Mer was hit by storm Xynthia on 28 February 2010; 29 out of the 52 casualties recorded in France occurred in La Faute. In the aftertmath of the disaster, 674 houses located in a "black zone" were dommed to destruction, their owners baing compensated by insurance and the authorities.
