Flag of Ghyvelde

The flag of Ghyvelde (photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the municipal coat of arms.
The arms are composed of the traditional arms of Ghyvelde, which have the Cross of War 1914-1918 appended, "superimposed" in base by the arms of Les Moëres, with an odd gradient effet.
[La Voix du Nord, 1 December 2015]

The arms of Les Moëres (Dutch, De Moeren, Marshes) were "Argent a garb of wheat supported by two reed garbs crossed in saltire all proper." They refer to the village's Latin motto, Juncum mutavit arista, "Reeds were replaced by wheat spikes".

The former flag of Ghyvelde was a banner of the municipal arms, "Ermine a bend gules three scallops bendwise or", with a dark blue stripe inscribed with the name of the municipality in yellow in the flag's upper fourth.

The arms were assigned by Th. Leuridan (Armorial des communes du département du Nord, 1909) as the arms of the lords of Hondschoote featured on the "Bergues painting", a painting kept in the Bergues municipal museum and entitled Accvrata territori Bergensis et aqvaedvctvvm delineatio. This is a scale map of the feudal domain of Bergues, with representation of the villages, together with their coats of arms, and watercourses. The painting is signed V.B. fecit anno 1641 (Latin, V.B. made it in 1641). This is, indeed, a copy of the map engraved by E.L. Creite for Sanderus' Flandria illustrata (1641), with the very same title and the arms added. The map was also copied in Joannis Blaeu's Atlas belgicus s ve Berlgii, cum regii tum foederati, geographica descriptio, published in Amsterdam in 1680.
The Bergues painting was in a very bad state of conservation; Leuridan, however, was able to identify the arms using a magnifying lens and assigned them to the villages by comparison with the copies.
