Primelin (650 inhabitants, 867 ha) is a commune in the Finistère department.

The territory was originally part of the ancient mother parish of Plougon-Plogoff. The Church of Saint-Primel is recorded as already being in a dilapidated state in 1372. The region was dominated by local lords, notably those of Lézurec, Kerouil, Kerounou, and La Salle. The Lézurec manor and its Chapel of Sainte-Marguerite (built in 1626) bear witness to this seigneurial influence.
The *tréviale* church (a subsidiary church serving a local district) of Saint-Tugen was built in the early 15th century by the lords of Lézurec; it was subsequently enlarged and remodeled in the 16th century. The old Church of Saint-Primel was rebuilt between 1774 and 1776. Established as a commune in 1790—with its rector serving as the first mayor—Primelin suffered acts of revolutionary vandalism in 1794, resulting in the destruction of the statues in the Chapel of Saint-Tugen.

The population grew from approximately 600 inhabitants during the Consulate era to a peak of over 1,600 in the early 20th century, despite the epidemics of the 19th century. The port of Le Loc'h was developed for fishing in the late 19th century, gaining a breakwater in 1906 and a lifeboat station (operating from 1907 to 1949). Finally, the commune has preserved its traditional field layout and sunken lanes, having never undergone land consolidation.

Flag of Primelin

The flag is white with the coat of arms including the motto, and with the name of the commune vertically written in blue at the hoist: photo from this page (2025).

The coat of arms is blazoned:
Party per chevron Or and Azure, 1. Or with eleven hurts set in orle and thre ermine spots sable  fesswise, 2.Azure, a key and a cane Or in saltire.

The cane belongs to Saint Primel, who was lame, while the key is the attribute of Saint Tugen, a great intercessor and protector against dog bites—and thus against rabies. As Primelin has always had one foot on land and the other at sea, the Or part symbolizes the land, and the azure symbolizes the sea. The hurts evoke the small wild plums known as "polosses" found in the commune, of which the locals (nicknamed"Polosseriens") were particularly fond.
The coat of arms was created in 1983. It is often accompanied by its Breton motto: "GREZ GWELLAC’H MAG HELLEZ" which translates to "Do better if you can."
