Presentation of Martín Muñoz de la Dehesa

The municipality of Martín Muñoz de la Dehesa (209 inhabitants in 2012; 1,766 ha) is located in the west of the Segovia Province, on the border with Ávila Province, 60 km from Segovia.

Martín Muñoz de la Dehesa is named for its re-settler, traditionally identified to the "good vassal Martín Muñoz", mentioned in El Cantar del Mio Cid (738; 1992; 3068). A Martín Muñoz was indeed listed among the vassals of King Alfonso IV, but his belonging to the Montemayor lineage of El Cid Campeador, alleged in the Cantar, is not backed up by any historical evidence.
In the Middle Ages, the village was known as Sant Iohan de la Defesa, and, subsequently, as Martínmuñocillo; the diminutive form of Martín Muñoz was possibly used for the sake of comparison with the then bigger village of Martín Muñoz de las Posadas, located 15 km away.
Martín Muñoz de la Dehesa belonged to the Community of the Town and Land of Arévalo.
