Presentation of Soto de Cerrato

The municipality of Soto de Cerrato (191 inhabitants in 2009; 1,294 ha) is located 10 km from Palencia.

Soto de Cerrato probably emerged as a hut village built near river Pisuerga in a soto, that is "a place planted with trees and shrubs"; the place was probably used as a quiet place of retirement by the bishops of Palencia. A settlement named Soto de Luso appeared in the 11th century. Later incorporated into the Royal domain, the village lived from agriculture, and, mostly, from wine-growing.
