Presentation of Villanueva de los Castillejos

The municipality of Villanueva de los Castillejos (2,747 inhabitants en 2015; 26,400 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km north-west of Huelva.

Villlanueva de los Castillejos was originally known as El Lugar de los Castillejos. The place adopted its current name when granted the title of villa on 22 July 1631 by Philip IV.
"los Castillejos" (small castles) may refer to the small fortified houses established by the Romans in the area to store food and ammunition for the armies heading from the mouth of river Guadiana to Mérida.
