The municipality of Piedrabuena (4.459 inhabitants in 2018; 56,536 ha, therefore the 5th biggest municipality in the province by its area; municipal website) is located 30 km west of Ciudad Real.

Piedrabuena was first documented in a Bull signed on 4 November 1187 by Pope Gregory VII. The town was the seat of a Commandery of the Order of Calatrava.
Philip II sold in 1572 the town to Alonso de Mesa, a captain in the Spanish army involved in the conquest of Peru, who became the first lord of Piedrabuena.
