Presentation of Toril

The municipality of Toril (148 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 775 in 1960; 14,976 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km north-east of Cáceres and 40 km south-east of Plasencia.

The structure of the settlement, dating back to the 15th century, does not match the common model of grouped village: some ten families live in the tiny urban nucleus established around the parish church, while the rest of the population lives in middle or large-sized farms scattered all over the territory.
The large municipal territory, mostly part of the Monfragüe National Park, is a typical dehesa (pasture); it also includes one of the biggest holly oak forests (alcornocal) in Extremadura.
The holly oak known as Abuelo (The Grandfather), standing in front of La Herguijuela farm, was one of the 31 Singular Trees registered by the Government of Extremadura; the tree fell down and died on 4 May 1991. The owners of the farm criticized the legal protection measures, which, they say, prevented any action that could have preserved the tree for a longer time.

Toril is said to have been the site of the Roman town of Lacipea, without significant evidence. Originally named Torril, from torre, "a tower". the village emerged in the 15th century as a cattle-breeding settlement, part of the sexmo (administrative division) of Campo Arañuelo ruled by the Council of Plasencia.
According to the Record of the Parishes of the Diocese of Plasencia, established on 30 April 1572, Toril depended at the time on the parish of Jaraíz.

Flag of Toril

The symbols of Toril are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Diagonally divided into two triangles by a blue and white wavy stripe representing river Toril (running from the hoist's lower angle to the fly's upper angle), green at hoist and white at fly. Charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Argent a rye spike or, 2. Vert a tobacco leaf or. A chief azure two fesses wavy argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The colors of the flag are those of the municipalities from which Toril originates; white and blue (Serradilla), white, green and blue (Talayuela), and white and green (Malpartida de Plasencia). The design of the flag, however, drastically differs from that of these towns, to highlight Toril's proper identity.
The rye (centeno) spike refers to the original site of Toril, the Centenillo pasture, once belonging to Serradilla and Malpartida de Plasencia.
Tobacco is the main source of income in Toril.
The chief represents river Toril, running from the north.
