The municipality of Olula del Río (6,216 inhabitants in 2016; 2,344 ha; municipal website) is located on river [río] Almanzora, 100 km north of Almería.
Olula del Río was already settled in the Copper Age, as evidenced by remains found in the Humosa cave, located at the foot of the Sierra de Olula.
The first organized settlement was established by the Arabs on the right bank of river Almanzora, on a rocky spur easy to defend. After the reconquest of the Almanzora valley and of the Sierra de los Filabres by the Catholic Monarchs in 1488, Purchena, Urrácal and Olula del Río were granted to Luis de la Cerda, Duke of Medinaceli. Incorporated to the Royal domain in 1560, Olula was subsequently acquired by Miguel Serrano, one of the suppressors of the Morisco revolt.
The flag of Olula del Río (photo, photo) is white with the municipal coat of arms in the center. The flag does not appear to have been officially registered.
The coat of arms of Olula del Río is prescribed by Decree No. 1,130, adopted on 19 May 1973 by the Spanish Government and published on 6 June 1973 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 135, pp. 11,431-11,432 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The coat of arms, which was validated by the Royal Academy of History, is described as follows:
Coat of arms: Argent on waves azure and argent two mounts vert in between a hill vert surmounted by a ruined castle gules. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.
The arms represent the geographical location of the town between the Sierras de Olula, de Urrácal and de los Filabres, with a hill surmounted by a half-ruined castle.
The waves represent river Almanzora.
