Nyborg is one of the oldest cities in Denmark, protected by the "new castle", which was completed around 1170.
Between 1250 and 1400 the assembly of the Danish nobility (Danehof) was held in Nyborg. In 1282 the first Danish constitution was codified here.
The castle was burnt down a few times during a Danish civil war and later by Swedish troops. In 1668 King Fredrik 3 strenghtened the fortifications.
The fortress was abandoned in 1869. Nyborg remained an important ferry port until 1998, when the bridge crossing the Great Belt was finished.

Shield Argent a port Gules with two towers and open port over blue horizontal lines interrupted in centre,
between the towers a crowned head under a 6-point star at dexter and a waxing crescent at sinister, all Azure.
Meaning:
The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which is known since around 1300. The oldest known use of the seal is said to be 1371, the oldest complete seal is known from 1536.
The arms display the local castle, built around 1170 and are thus canting ("Nyborg" is "new castle)".
The crescent is a symbol of eternity and the star an attribute of St. Mary. The head, which appears in the 15th century, has an unknown origin.
The head is not crowned in the city arms, which display on a blue shield a red masoned castle with golden crescent and star and a silver head without crown.
