Bernau Coat of Arms

Shield Or, a bear rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
Since 1811 the municipality used seals, only displaying an inscription "VOGTEI BERNAU" (a Vogtei is administrated by a reeve). The bear appeared on local seals first in 1880. The General State Archive suggested the current pattern in 1911, which was accepted by the municipality. But in local seals the bear was displayed without shield until 1929. The bear is (erroneously) canting, as the name of the municipality probably is derived from a person named Bero. The settlement was first mentioned as a possession of the St. Blasien Monastery in 1173 as Bernowa.

The banner was approved on 24 January 1989 by the county administration. The arms were adopted in 1911.
