    Putbus Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess; above Gules antlers Or surrounding an inescutcheon Argent showing a griffin's head Gules armed Or; beneath chequered of Sable and Or.
Putbus was first mentioned in 1253. In the middle of the 13th century it became a possession of a branch line of the Princes of Rügen, which named themselves by the city. In 1483 it was split into a Danish and a Rugian branch. Putbus remained the seat of the latter. In 1702 the branch died out and Putbus became a possession of the Danish branch, which was upgraded to an Imperial County (Reichsgrafschaft) in 1727. In 1817 Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus gained the title of a Prince in Prussia. Putbus was established as a luxury spa for the nobility and several new buildings and a park were added. The local castle was destroyed by fire in 1872. Putbus was seat of the namesake county from 1952 until 1956 and finally gained the title of a city in 1960.
The antlers are referring to the local game reserve, which was established in 1833. The inescutcheon is reminding on the suzerainty of the Dukes of Pommern, to which Putbus belonged since 1325. The chequered field is taken from the arms of the Putbus family.

The arms were approved on 9 December 1938 by Province Governor (Oberpräsident) in Stettin. The flag was designed in 1930 and mentioned in the local Hauptsatzung after 1990. Both were published in the Municipal Roll of Arms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as no.195
