Leonberg Coat of Arms

Shield Argent a dragon issuant Gules, armed and tongued Or holding a hammer Sable in pale by his claws, over all an abased fess wavy Azure.
Meaning:
The red dragon is the heraldic animal of the Cistercian Waldsassen Monastery and is derived from the apocryphal arms of its founders from the Diepoldinger kin. The monastery acquired the village around 1224 and accumulated further real estates and rights of sovereignty in the area. The hammer is stressing the economic importance of mining. The hammer mill of Altenhammer was first mentioned in 1434. Near Pfaffenreuth there had been major ironworks in the 19th century. The fess wavy is a representation of the little Wondreb River, which crosses the municipality.
