Gammertingen Coat of Arms

[Gammertingen CoA] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 25 Sep 2018

Shield Argent, an antler Azure in pale at dexter, a lion rampant Azure tongued Gules at sinister. The lion sometimes is also armed Gules.
Meaning:
The first local seal was made in the late 14th century. The existence of prints is proven since 1412. The seals didn't change until the 19th century. The animal had been interpreted as lion, bear or dog as well. A dog had been part of the crest of the helmet in the Hohenzollern arms. Due to the first coloured painting of the arms from 1535 it is very likely that the animal should be the lion of the Counts of Gammertingen. He became a part of the city arms via the Margraves of Ronsberg by the Counts of Veringen, who granted city rights after 1265. The antler also had been taken from the Veringen family arms. The tincture of the antler was changed to blue in 1952.
