Amt Hüttener Berge

Introduction of Hüttener Berge Subcounty

On 1 January 2008 the former subcounties of Hütten and Wittensee were dissolved and replaced by the new subcounty of Hüttener Berge with Groß Wittensee (not yet having a municipal flag) as its capital. The new subcounty overtook the arms of former subcounty of Hütten on 1 January 2008.

Hüttener Berge Subcounty Flag

It is a green over yellow horizontal bicolour. The green stripe is slightly broader. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag.

Hüttener Berge Coat of Arms

In a golden (= yellow) shield are three green oak trees, ingrained into three green hills. Between the stems is a red stag forcene.
Meaning:
These arms belonged to the former Hütten Subcounty from 1998 until 2007. The arms are based upon a seal of the historical subdistrict of Berg (Berg Harde) from 1527, which had been granted by the sovereign. The name Hüttener Berge seems to be related to a historical hunting lodge of the dukes.

Ahlefeld-Bistensee Municipal Coat of Arms

In a blue shield is a golden three-peaked mountain, superimposed by four green canes. On the blue base is a silver (= white) pikeperch.
Meaning:
The arms belonged to the former municipality of Bistensee and were overtaken by the current municipality, after Ahlefeld and Bistensee had merged on 1 March 2008. Bistensee probably means "lake of canes" (German: Binsen). Pikeperches even today exist in the lake. The mountain is symbolizing the Hüttener Berge. The yellow colour is inspired by the bloom of rapeseed.

Ascheffel Municipal Coat of Arms

In a blue shield is a golden three-peaked mountain, superimposed by a blue grain beaker over a blue fess wavy and flanked by two blue ears of grain.
Meaning:
The colours are those of Schleswig. The ensemble is canting. The name of the municipality means "bushel near creek". For example a Prussian bushel was an equivalent of approx. 55 litres and was used for the measuring of grain (and other dry bulk goods like coal). A bushel is denoting both, the measure of capacity and the beaker as well.

Borgstedt Municipal Coat of Arms

The green shield is divided by a bend sinister wavy. Above right is a golden (= yellow) staff, below left a golden (= yellow) wheel with eight spokes.
Meaning:
The bend wavy is symbolizing Eider River, Eider Canal and Kiel Canal and stresses the importance of haul shipping in the past. The staff is a so called Dingstock, ending in three annulets fixed by loops. It was an instrument to gather the inhabitants. The wheel is symbolizing the mobility of the inhabitants in a modern world.

Brekendorf Municipal Coat of Arms

In a golden shield is a blue three-peaked mountain, superimposed by a golden (= yellow), adorned disc. Above the mountain is a blue ant.
Meaning:
The colours are those of Schleswig. The mountain is alluding to the location on the edge of the Hüttener Berge. The disc was found during archaeological excavations. There is a legend, that the former village had been broken down (Lower German: aftobreken) by reason of an invasion of ants.

It is a yellow flag. Between two blue wavy, horizontal lines is the red image of the Neo-Gothic church of Bünsdorf flanked by four green oak leaves ordered 2:2.

Bünsdorf Municipal Coat of Arms

It is a golden (= yellow) shield. Over a base of blue and silver (= white) waves is the red image of the Neo-Gothic church of Bünsdorf flanked by four green oak leaves ordered 2:2.
Meaning:
The local church is the central element. The first church was built in the 13th century, burned down however in 1660. In 1862 the successor was built in contemporary Neo-Gothic style. The blue elements are symbolizing nearby Westensee, a local lake, while the green leaves are symbolizing the Hüttener Berge. Their number is representing the settlement cores of Bünsdorf, Schirnau, Steinrade and Wentorf, which merged in 1928.

Damendorf Municipal Coat of Arms

A golden (= yellow) three-peaked mountain is filling the base of the blue shield. On top of the outer peaks are golden (= yellow) oaks. On top of the central peak is a golden (= yellow), rampant wolf. The mountain is superimposed by a blue megalithic tomb.
Meaning:
Oaks and wolf are reminding on the existence of wolves in the forests in the past. Oaks and peaks are symbolizing the Hüttener Berge. The tomb is symbolizing local archaeological excavations. The colours are those of Schleswig.

It is a green over white over green horizontal triband with ratio 1:2:1. The upper stripe is superimposed by three white horseshoes ordered horizontally. The white stripe is superimposed by the bunch as described below.

Haby Municipal Coat of Arms

In a silver (= white) shield is a bunch of three branches of wild rose, the outer branches have five green leaves each. The central branch has two red hips. The green chief is superimposed by three silver (= white) horseshoes ordered per fess.
Meaning:
The horseshoes are alluding to themselves, to the blacksmiths producing them and to the farmers using them by ploughing the fields. They are a symbol of the rural community for centuries. The wild rose is a canting element. The white colour is symbolizing Schilksee and Westensee, two local lakes.

Holtsee means literally "wooden lake", symbolized by the tree (wood) and the base resp. the wavy lines (lake). The arms thus are canting. The golden colour is symbolizing mellow grain.

Holzbunge Municipal Coat of Arms

The central figure in the blue shield is a silver (= white) half-timbered farmhouse. All other figures are silver (= white) too. Above are two leaves of beech tree pointing towards one another. Below is a branch of oak tree, consisting of two leaves and one acorn.
Meaning:
The ensemble is canting. Holzbunge is a building-lot in the forests, which is symbolized by a house between trees, represented by leaves and branch.

The green shield is divided by a silver (= white) fess wavy. Above is a golden (= yellow) rising, radiant sun. Below is a silver Suebish knot.
Meaning:
The rising sun is symbolizing the name, which means "eastern village". The knot is symbolizing the settlement, which had been here for times immemorial. One well preserved example of a Suebish knot was found in a prehistorical grave.

Owschlag Municipal Coat of Arms

The shield is divided per fess. Above in a silver (= white) field is a black blackcock. Below in a blue field is a half, golden (= yellow) millwheel.
Meaning:
The blackcock, nowadays nearly died out, is symbolizing the swamps around Owschlag and the economic importance of the digging of peat. The wheel is symbolizing a local wind- and watermill, maintained by long term lease in the past. The colours of silver and blue are representing the riches of water.

Sehestedt Municipal Coat of Arms

In a blue shield is a silver (= white) lotus seeded golden (= yellow) and surrounded by three silver (= white) heart-shaped leaves.
Meaning:
The pattern is a modification of the arms of the local von Sehestedt family. Furthermore it is alluding to the name of the municipality, which means "place near lake". The current arms display however a real lotus (Latin: nymphaea alba). The colours are taken from the arms of the family.
