Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Gules, a tower Argent on a basement of the same and flanked by supports of the same, one in bend and the other per bend sinister. The shield is topped by a 6-spokes wheel Argent.
Meaning:
The tower is symbolising a thorn tower or salina, specifically built for the pumping of the salty waters, which were discovered by Maerker in 1724. The waters have made the town a health spa, in 1905 the prefix "Bad" was added. The shape of the shield is the same like that one of Northrhine Westphalia. The wheel on top of the shield was part of the arms since the approval and is alluding to the Bishopric of Osnabrück.
The arms were approved in 1935 by Oberprädisent of Prussian Hannover Province.
