According to the local Hauptsatzung a blue-white banner is used, to which the arms can be added. The above drawing shows the official arms, whereas the drawing in Günther 1996c shows the arms with a mural crown and other decoration, and a differently shaped shield.

Shield Argent, a fish Azure in bend.
Meaning:
The origin of the fish, a common carp (Latin: Cyprinus Carpio), is unknown. Source says that the settlement had been established by a nameless family from Nauen village, today part of Lutter am Barenberge. The settlement was first mentioned in 1186. It gained city rights in 1292 and the first city hall was completed in 1302. Probably the current arms existed already then, but I found no proof of this thesis. The arms can be found on an architectural sculpture on the façade of the current city hall, which was finished in the 19th century. According to Ralf Hartemink the appearance of the arms on a city stamp from 1810 is sure. The arms basically always remained the same, but the type of shield varied, and decorative ornaments like wreaths, rocailles and mural crowns were frequently added. The official version, to be seen on a stamp within the Hauptsatzung displays the fish in a simple Iberian shield. The city's webpage however displays a version with red mural crown, baroque shield and rocailles.
