Rothenburg Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a narrowing tower issuant Argent masoned Sable with roof Gules topped by two balls Or and port Azure, flanked by two wreaths Vert each having three roses Or, in chief a number Sable "1268".
A settlement grew besides an estate, which had been finished in 1264. In 1268 the settlement was mentioned as a city in a charter of Margrave Otto of Brandenburg. The main business lines had been crafts and agriculture. The historical arms displayed a canting red castle (German: Rote Burg). The thorny wreaths with roses could have been a decorative element on the old medieval seals. The design appears on the city seal from 1698. The current tinctures were introduced after WW2. The number is referring to the year, when Rothenburg was first mentioned. According to source the date was already added in 1815. However postcards from around 1900, Johann Siebmacher (1885) and Otto Hupp (1925) don´t show the date.

The colours of the banner are traditional. The arms were granted in 1347 by Emperor Karl IV.
