Nagold Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess of Argent and Gules, superimposed by a nail Azure in pale.
Meaning:
Nagold city was established by the Counts of Hohenberg in the 13th century as a direct neighbour of the namesake village. The existence of the first city seal is proven since 1348, displaying only the Hohenberg family arms, a shield parted per fess. In 1363 the Nagold Branch of the counts sold the city to Württemberg. The canting nail (German: Nagel) appears first on the city arms in 1592. Sometimes the arms displayed a nail Argent in a shield Gules instead. The nail appeared on seals not before 1936. The red field meanwhile had been latticed by connected black diamonds. The lattice was omitted since 1977 and the shield since then is embowed triangular.
