Meaning:
The staff is taken from the arms of Wathlingen Municipality, the kettle from the arms of Nienhagen. The lion might be a modification of the arms of the Welfen kin.

Wathlingen Coat of Arms

The shield is Vert, in base a kettle Or flanked by two wheat ears Or, in chief hammer and mallet Argent crossed per saltire.
Meaning:
The kettle, also called pipkin, probably is referring to the municipality's old age. It was first mentioned 1022, when Bischop Bernward of Hildesheim founded local St.Michael Monastery. The ears are symbolizing agriculture. Hammer and mallet are symbolizing mining, i.e. the production of salt.
