The municipality of Saint-Joseph-de-Sorel (1,642 inhabitants in 2016; 340 ha) is located 100 km north-east of Montreal, on the confluence or river Richelieu with the Saint-Lawrence.

The coat of arms is "Quarterly by a cross or, 1.Gules a cogwheel or, 2. and 3. Sable a running river in bend argent, 4. Gules an elderberry argent. The shield surmounted by a mural crown or with five crenellated towers. The shield supported by two maple branches slipped or crossed in base in saltire and tied by a ribbon gules holding a scroll or inscribed in Roman letters 'Acta Non Verba'."

Gules is a symbol of charity and justice.
Sable is a symbol of humility.
The cross is the symbol of the Christian religion. It represents here the pioneers' faith and the town's patron saint.
The cogwheel represents industry in Saint-Joseph-de-Sorel.
Or is a symbol of generosity, loyalty and glory.
The two featured river are the Saint-Lawrence and the Richelieu, highlighting the geographical location of the town.
The elderberry ("sureau") is taken from the canting arms of Lord Pierre de Sorel / Saurel (1628-1682). Born in Grenoble, he came to Canada in 1665 as captain in the Carignan regiment. The same year, he built Fort Sorel at the mouth of the Richelieu.
"Acta Non Verba" (Latin, "Acts rather than Words" / "Working rather then Speaking" is a motto credited to General Lazare Hoche (1768-1797), one of the heroes of the French Revolution.
The mural crown identifies a town.
