Municipality

The municipality of Iraceminha (4,253 inhabitants in 2010; 16,438 ha) is located 630 km west of Florianópolis.

Iraceminha was established in 1947 on plots sold by the Companhia Territorial Sul Brasil. In 1948, Alfonso Korb's family, coming from Espuma, opened roads and cleared the forest to crop maize. The maize mill they established in 1950, powered by river Lajeado, would be operated for more than five decades. Timber industry was initiated in 1951, the first sawmill being inaugurated in 1952, which allowed the building of the first houses of Iraceminha.
The district of Iraceminha was established within the municipality of Cunha Porã by Law No. 27 promulgated on 17 August 1959. In a plebiscite organized on 18 October 1987, 90% of the inhabitants of Iraceminha approved the elevation of the district to a municipality; the establishment of the municipality was vetoed the next year by Pedro Ivo Campos, Governor of Santa Catarina, a decision which was confirmed at the federal level.
The new Constitution promulgated in 1988 changed the rules of municipal emancipation; accordingly, the municipality of Iraceminha was established by State Law No. 7,577 promulgated on 26 April 1989 and inaugurated on 1 January 1990.
