Municipality

The municipality of Tavares (5,353 inhabitants in 2012; 60,426 ha) is located between the Lagoa das Patos lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, 140 km south-west of Porto Alegre.

Tavares was settled in 1760 by Azorean immigrants led by Colonel Antonio da Silva Tavares.
Pink shrimps harvested by traditional fishers from Lagoa do Peixe lagoon are considered as Brazil's best shrimps. The Lagoa do Peixe National Park, mostly (90%) located on the municipal territory of Tavares, is a bird sanctuary.

Symbols

Mainly a yellow flag with the municipal coat of arms centred, but in the upper hoist a small blue triangle, and in the lower hoist a small red triangle, giving the impression of a very tricolour blue-yellow-red with a very broad central band.

The flag and arms of Tavares are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 62 promulgated on 14 December 1984.

Article 2.
The coat of arms of the municipality obeys the following description.
A Portuguese shield. In chief, over a line dividing horizontally the shield a sun or (yellow) emitting rays and surmounted by a white gull all on a field gules (red); beneath the line the other half of the sun of the same color superimposed in the center by a liberty cap gules emitting rays to a black and white lighthouse; dexter on a field vert (green) a bovine's head or sinister an onion, in the background pines or; in base, a fess wavy striated or on a field azure (blue).
The heron represents preservation of ecology, a symbol of purity and hope, representing also liberty of the emancipated population. The bovine's head represents cattle-breeding and onion the municipality's main source of income. The pines represent forest and reforestation. The shrimp represents seafood. The sun represents light as the symbol of the community's awakening, the liberty cap represents freedom and population's awakening to emancipation. The lighthouse, close to the mainland, represents the municipality's limits and sea and lagoon water. The field gules, vert and azure with stripes or represent life, fields, sea, and sand, respectively.
The shield is surmounted by a five-towered mural crown or. Beneath the shield a scroll gules inscribed "AMIZADE E HOSPITALIDADE" (Friendship and Hospitality) and "12 - 05 - TAVARES - 1982", the date of the municipality's political emancipation. Starting from the scroll's upper part on the shield's sides, dexter a maize plant and sinister a rice panicle the two or, representing important crops for the municipality's economy.

Article 4.
The flag of the municipality of Tavares shall have for official colors blue, yellow and red, forming a central diagonal stripe (yellow) and two right-angled triangles placed in the inner upper part and outer lower part, respectively, representing:
I - Blue, water of the sea and lagoon that bath the municipality.
II - Yellow, the economical and social potential.
III - Red, manpower of a supportive and fair community.
In the diagonal's center shall be placed the municipality's coat of arms.

Article 5.
The flag's features shall obey the following rules.
I - The flag's width shall be 12 units.
II - The flag's length shall be 18 units.
III - The yellow central diagonal is limited by two right lines running from the 8th unit of the inner lateral part to the 10th unit of the upper part, and from the 9th unit of the lower part to the 8th unit of the outer lateral part.
IV - The coat of arms centered in the diagonal stripe shall have a width of 7 units.
