The municipality of Saldanha Marinho (2,869 inhabitants in 2010; 22,161 ha)
is located 330 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
The municipality is named
for the journalist, lawyer and politician Joaquim Saldanha Marinho (1816-1895).
He served as President of Minas Gerais (1865-1867) and of São Paulo (1867-1868),
where he pushed the establishment of railway lines. Among the signatories of the
Republican Manifesto in 1870, he was one of the redactors of the draft of the
Republican Constitution and seated at the Senate from 1890 to his death.

The flag of Saldanha Marinho is vertically divided green-red-white with the
municipal coat of arms in the center.

The coat of arms of Saldanha Marinho is prescribed by Municipal Law No.
44 promulgated on 30 August 1989.
Article 1.
A Portuguese shield
divided into two parts. In chief on a field [argent] a sun, wheat and soybean
plants proper. In base, on a field or the hilly relief planted vert (green). In
the extreme lateral parts, maize plants proper. The shield surmounted by a
four-towered mural crown or. In the lower part, a scroll or inscribed sable
(black) "9 de MAIO - SALDANHA MARINHO - 1988".
