Municipality

The municipality of Redentora (11,629 inhabitants in 2010; 30,264 ha) is located 450 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Redentora was known in the early 1800s as Vila Seca (Dry Town), a name referring to the region's limited resources in freshwater. The first colonists of the place are Juio de Moura and his family, who settled around 1900 a plot belonging to Fazenda dos Borges, a domain established in 1870 by Manoel and Ana Belmont Borges.
The district of Redenção (Redemption) was established in 1888 within the municipality of Palmeira das Missões. In 1943 or 1947, the district was transfered to Três Passos and renamed to Redentora after a statue of Christ Redemptor.
The municipality of Rendetora was established on 12 April 1964.
